Random-access memory (RAM) is a type of computer data storage that holds data and machine code currently being used. RAM allows data to be read or written quickly regardless of its physical location in the memory. In comparison, other direct-access data storage media like hard drives, CD-RWs, DVD-RWs, and older magnetic tapes and drum memories require more time to read and write data items depending on their physical location on the storage medium, because of mechanical restrictions.
